Lines of Desire: R&D 2 - UV Lightbox, photograms and over painting.

In the last couple of months I have been working with the UV lightbox. I have been interested in finding a creative process that could lend itself to a more reliable production method that could be used in commercial commissions.

I have been working on 15 pieces of work in which I combine processes of Cyanotype OHP film reproduction methods which I have used to depict the legs and maps with in the image. I have also used pressed sapling, as photograms, in the foreground section as well as using salt and stones for the sky section.

After the 2nd exposure, I was unhappy with the way in which the image could be read (as a commercial work), as one would an illustration. I began painting over and defining the image using the Prussian blue paint, a by product of the Cyanotype painting with Prussian blue paint/ink.

The final image felt overworked. Through this error, I came to realise that although I’d like to find a way in which to use Cyanotype for commercial commissioned work, it was too uncertain and unreliable and so, although I may use cut outs for 2D and 3D elements in a digital work, this process will remain a process that I use for art works.

I have no issue with taking commercial commissions, and welcome them as it is undoubtably a significant way in which to stabilise my life so that I can produce more experimental pieces. However, I need to continue to work on a process that I am happy with under pressure.

I will now go on to reproduce the images as I turn towards balancing order/chaos balanced at the precipice of the known as i attempt to feel my way somewhere between being in control of the image and giving up control to nature and the elements.
