Breathe (2026) : sewn Cyanotype

Breathe has sat quietly in the corner of the studio since the pandemic. A reproduction of the original Kozo cynotype, the thick paper on which it was giclee printed, felt unfinished. For years I have pondered about whether I should depict the heart at the centre of the work. Should I emboss, cut, gild… it needed a focal point. Originally formed from a stone covering the paper… other cyanotypes felt very complete but this one did not.

Breathe (2026) combines the sewn approach from ‘Interconnection’ (2008), with ‘Breath’ 2021. The work speaks to healing from emotional trauma arising from the time of the pandemic.

The final work was sent to the framers yesterday. It will have glass on the front and back so that it can be back lit through the heart section.

It is hoped that the final piece will be strong, impactful and very, very beautiful.
